Leaping lions
The "Leaping Lions" are on the stone fence at the top of the stone steps in front of the Yomeimon Gate. The lions are carved in unison with the stone fence. This lions also serve as reinforcements to prevent the stone fence from collapsing.
Shogun, Tokugawa Iemitsu saw it and commented, "It looks like a lion leaping over a stone fence," and thus it is called "Tobigoe no shishi" (Leap-over lion).
They are not "komainu," but they are familiar to fans of komainu.
Both of them are standing on their heads and their expressions are worn out, but let's bend down and look into their faces. They are properly formed as "A" and "Un" (open-outh and closed mouth).

The back leg is floating, just like a "jump over".

They serve as reinforcing posts for the stone fence.

If you crouch down and look through, you can see the expression on their faces. This is the one of "Un"

This is "A". It appears to stick out its tongue. Quite mischievous.
It is located in front of the Yangmyong Gate, so the general public should have been able to see it.
